Welp, I got a headstart on my summer goals and killed number one on the list! Took many sleepless nights and a whole lot of jitters to get through, but I scored a design internship opportunity that just kind of randomly landed in my lap.. at a bar. I knew my excessive drinking was good for something!

Anyways, I was super nervous at the interview but somehow found the right words on explaining my work and my journey into design. I must've done something right and got that joint! I'll be working with the firm M T W T F over the summer where the guy I spoke with was former Art Director of 2x4, a design firm that has done lots of work I admire.

I've got a couple months to prepare, but I'm already super nervous, not so much of the workload (he told me my stress level with multiply by 10) but more so if I can keep up with these guys. They're a pretty big deal, the work they do is beyond my typographic talents and this is my first real design internship. I'm having initial doubts of my ability but I know I really shouldn't put myself down too much and I'm hopeful that I can at least not make myself look like a complete waste of talent!

On the more positive perspective, I'm hyped at the chance to work with someone who has been so successful in the industry and the knowledge I can take from the experience of creating smart and sophisticated design. I'll let ya'll know how it works out!

Summer Goals

5. Kill it at a rooftop pool

7. Explore new areas/neighborhoods on my bike
8. Discover at least one new restaurant a week.
9. Finish portfolio website
10. Museum trip once a week
11. One drawing/sketch a day

If you would like to participate in any or all of these goals, I sure would welcome the company!

Recently, I came across some work by graphic designer Jesse Arneson, who also happened to help curate the 30 Reasons poster exhibition (http://30reasons.org/index.php). The identity he helped build with Wall to Wall studios for the Hawaiian pizza company JJ Dolan is just too good! I always enjoy simple but effective interactivity and the website definitely caught my eye. And of course being the child I am, this is the first "art" I created. In defense of being a "hipster," I knew I was on the right path when I look back at age 5 or so. It all started with the large plastic frames that are so very hip today as Seye (via http://seyeone.blogspot.com/) points out. I rocked them for a good 8-10 years and I'm sure that what made me so bad ass.

However, at some point in my life, I came under the notion that they were just not "cool enough" for Junior High and on and I bailed out on the look. Huge mistake, I could've gotten with so many hipster girls back than (if they existed in Bethesda)!

It appears I rocked quite a variety of styles, my favorite particularly the square grey frames paired with the Dracula costume. So tight.

At first when I came across these images, I thought I was looking at a illustration collage. Upon further investigation I couldn't have been more wrong. Interior designer Maria Yasko (http://www.behance.net/modimodi) created Moominvalley based on the Moomin books by Finnish novelist, Tove Jansson and it couldn't be more wonderful!

Everything from her colors to the simple shapes creates such a dreamlike setting. It just goes to show that all areas of discipline can interact with one another to create an amazing outcome.

Here's the first set of work I did for my first semester at graduate school. These were done for my Visual Perception class, which we primarily focused on Rudolf Arnheim's "Art and It's Visual Perceptions." We learned how Arnheim portrayed the visual process in psychological terms and through that we created pieces of work based off of those concepts. Ten concepts were explained, those ten being: Balance, Shape, Form, Growth, Space, Light, Color, Movement, Dynamics, and Expression. Each week, we were to create a series of related projects, each project demonstrating two concepts. I chose to create concert posters are here are the results. The "Them Crooked Vultures" poster is definitely my strongest and there are plans to convert that into screenprint in the future!

One important thing to note is that all of these were created by construction paper. I've always been connected to the hands on approach and that's something that will always be apart of me. Afterwards, I brought them into Photoshop and gave a little bit more "oomph" to them. The whole process was a blast and nice break away from sitting in front of a computer all day.

More graduate work will be posted before I begin the new semester shortly, so be patient!

f I had to name 2 designers off the top of my head that are a huge influence to me, immediately I would think Stefan Sagmeister and Rick Valicenti. Recently I had the privilege of a guest critique by Rick Valicenti and of course I became super nervous. I spent many hours in preparation, working on my presentation for that class. With a photography/painting background before going design, Rick is a huge inspiration. He's got a style that is definitely recognizable and experimental at times, which I love.

In my typography class, we are experimenting with type and it's pretty awesome. I'm learning a lot about the formal aspects but also how type can be used in a more conceptual way. Rick did a similar project for a year called "Notes to Self." It was just a personal exploration about "chance" which he described as a large part of his work. That is exactly how I thought when I painted back in college.

Anyways, our final project is a type booklet of all the compositions we've done this semester and for the last page, we had to use type somehow in any format besides print. This could be shirts, scarves, underwear, etc. I didn't want to go the route everyone was taking with apparel so I thought why not do it temporary tattoo format! My idea off this is inspired by "Notes to Self." Here is a sample of what I'll be printing on tattoo paper among other things to make a full sleeve on my right arm (that we have to wear/present at our survey/final critique)!

My classmates are pretty awesome. A good amount of us have been hanging outside of class, getting happy hour deals ($1 dollar beers in Manhattan?? That's better than anything I got in DC)! Over a few beers, we got to the point of discussing an identity for ourselves because after all, that's part of what we are in school for! We've become the Commrads (purposefully mispelled) of the Comm D Collective. A few of us have been procrastinating like crazy all day today and have been coming up with an identity for the group, which has seem to be heading a Communist style for some reason. First one is my proposal in accordance to that. It's neato to see the different approaches and styles other students are coming up with. First image are my proposals using CDC as our identity, thrown together very quickly, seeing as how I am completely dumped on with work this weekend!

Pratt Thus Far

So far, I've been updating my blog with not my work or progress, but others. Not only have I been super busy with school, I am finding myself occupied immensely in other design and illustration blogs. Basically when I'm not eating or working, I'm looking at other design work. It's awesome!

But I figured I'd give a mini update/sneak peek into what I've been working on. Being back in school is definitely the best decision I've made. I'm learning so much more than I did at UMD in terms of what I want to get out of an education. Classmates rule which is always a plus. And sure enough, the work load is demanding, but satisfying. I like being busy, it's a good feeling.

For my visual communications class, I am rebranding Bike New York, a not for profit organization that promotes safe biking in the city. Such an awesome cause, especially since I'm new to the NYC biking scene (which is such a rush). So here is a tiny bit of work that I've done so far. 95% of what is shown are computer sketches (you should see my actual sketchbook) of a new logo for Bike New York. Check out their website and current logo, which is pretty bland so a rebrand is definitely in order! One of these logos I'm satisfied with for now, can you guess which one?

Just got back from my trip to Vietnam/Japan with my sisters. The trip was very tiring because of all the constant traveling, but it was awesome none the less. I'm glad to have finally had the chance to visit Vietnam; it's such a different experience than living in the United States. The traffic laws there are basically non existent, the lifestyle is a complete 180, and the food is dirt cheap. And when I say dirt cheap, I'm talking $1-2 menus, with 50 cent happy hour. One meal, which we ordered at least 8 dishes, with drinks came to a total of 240,000 dong, or around $15. Amazing!

Order of cities visited in Vietnam: Saigon, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Long Hai, Vung Tau, Hanoi, Nha Trang.

As for Tokyo, it was pretty much amazing. It's like New York City but 100x better. Everyone there is super polite, there's so many different districts to visit, and there's never a dull moment. Stayed with another one of my uncle/aunt who live right next to the Tokyo Tower. Since my uncle is on a business trip with the World Bank, they hook up with the executive suite in a huge building. He says the apartment costs around $9000 a month. Yeah, Tokyo is not cheap. I don't even want to know how much it would have cost to get a hotel in Tokyo.

I've never been good with a camera, it's something I wish to learn more about. I took these last night after painting in the studio and for what I know about photography (jack), I like how these turned out.

I plan to go to SCAD for my masters in motion graphics, but recently part of me wants to focus on painting. I love both graphic design and painting, and I wish I could just do art for art my whole life. Obviously that's not realistic, too bad. Maybe I'll just take painting classes there to help develop.

First two are my most recent (and first time using oil in a long long time) and the last 2 are just old pieces I never really showed.
